On June 6, HUAWEI released a software update that improved image quality on the P30 Pro. The updated firmware improved colors and fixed an issue with videos shot on the front-facing camera. We have a before-and-after comparison here.
Even though the Huawei P30 and Huawei P30 Pro hit store shelves back in March of this year, the device has still been able to maintain its title of having one of the best cameras on a smartphone to-date. We published our camera review of the P30 Pro a couple of months after release, and the company has continued to improve the experience with OTA software updates. This week the company has begun rolling out a new EMUI update which, among with other things, adds the Super Night Mode feature as an option for the front-facing camera.
Huawei P30 Pro Gets A New Software Update
Huawei made major headlines with the release of the P30 series. Even the Lite variant has received praise from a very targeted segment of the community. Most of the praise for this series has been about the camera though and Huawei continues to work on new features and optimizations. Those of you who own the Huawei P30 or P30 Pro and are running the Chinese version of the software should look forward to an OTA update that has already begun to roll out to the public.
A temporary license the enabled Huawei to continue making software updates for existing phones, expired on 17 August 2020, though security updates look to be exempt. Part of its reason for existence was to enable rural network operators in the US to continue receiving updates for the Huawei hardware built into its cell towers. However, for most consumers, it's the effects on the smartphone side of things that will be most keenly felt. The expiration means Google can't provide updates either.
To achieve all of this impressive zoomage, Huawei is using a quadruple-camera system that combines a 40-megapixel f/1.6 wide-angle camera with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), a 20-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor, and a Time Of Flight (ToF) lens with a flood illuminator. The latter is used to dramatically improve the bokeh-style blur behind the subject of a portrait-style photograph. With future software updates, Huawei says the ToF will also be able to measure objects and people from within the viewfinder, similar to the Measure app built-into the latest versions of Apple's iOS.
1 April 2019: Huawei is rolling out its first software update for the P30 Pro as an OTA (over the air) update. The Huawei P30 Pro update brings EMUI up to version 9.1.0.124 with build number C431E4R2P2. It's just over 400MB in size.
The firmware version S90xU1UEU2BVJA is included with the Android 13 upgrade for the carrier-unlocked variants of the Galaxy S22+, Galaxy S22, and Galaxy S22 Ultra. The update includes One UI 5.0, which gives smartphones a new UI design. The new software also includes enhanced widgets, stacked widgets, improved privacy, faster performance, and enhanced security. It is still running the security patch from October 2022.
In the US, the Galaxy A50 is getting a fresh software update. The most recent U.S. Android security patch, from October 2022, is being picked up by the device. The carrier-locked variant has the update available right now. It should shortly get to the unlocked version.
The eagerly anticipated 5G service was introduced earlier this month in a few Indian locations by Airtel and Reliance Jio. To allow 5G on their separate phones, certain high-end top manufacturers haven't yet published software updates.
It should be stated that the software buildout process is phased, so it might take a few days for all phones to be fully updated. In the coming weeks, OnePlus is likely to release a different 5G update for the OnePlus Nord 2 series, OnePlus 8 T, 8 Pro, and the OnePlus 8.
According to the version, this rollout is only for smartphones running EMUI 12. However, because of limited availability or an expansion strategy, some users still do not have the most recent EMUI software capability. We also want to let you know that EMUI 12 is currently being developed for older models in the global market, such as the Huawei Mate 10 and P 20 series. Meanwhile, progress toward the EMUI 13 update is picking up.
If you don't want to wait for a notification, check the software update on your Huawei P30 lite phones manually. To do so, go to your device's Settings, scroll to the bottom and tap on System and updates, and then tap on Software updates.
The latest July 2022 update is available for all Huawei P30 series including Huawei P30 and Huawei P30 Pro. The users who are running HarmonyOS 2.0.0.247 will soon receive the software update notification that bumped the version to HarmonyOS 2.0.0.268.
Or perhaps Huawei use said open-source option, which is available to any brand but shorn of the Google mobile services, to create its own update for Android Q, but one that might not be identical to the one users would receive if the software upgrade landed normally.
The blog post also doesn't share any details on what will happen after Android Q. The Huawei ban in the US may continue to cause issues for those who have bought Android devices and expect to get solid software updates for a number of years afterwards.

Huawei P30 Pro has received its first software update just days after it was unveiled in Paris. The new update, which is apparently rolling out as an over-the-air (OTA) package, enables the Always on Display feature of the smartphone to work with the third-party app notifications.
Samsung has stopped selling the original S21 family, but the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE offers similar hardware for slightly less. It has a large, 6.4-inch OLED screen, as well as a Snapdragon 888 processor, the same kind that was in every flagship phone last year. However, the $700 asking price makes it only $100 less than the Galaxy S22, which runs faster, offers better build quality, and will receive updates more frequently. The Pixel 7, meanwhile, costs $100 less and provides a better software experience and superior camera performance.
The latest update for the Huawei P30 Pro smartphone brings improvements in camera, fingerprint scanner functionality, and also enhances display alongside audio-video synchronization. As per the press release issued by the company concerning the new software update, the camera night mode has been improved to capture better low-light images. It also enhances the SuperZoom functionality.
The software update tweaks the in-display fingerprint sensor by improving unlock sensitivity and unlock timing. The audio-video synchronization has been fixed with this update. Therefore the issue concerning the recording of hands-free Instagram videos has also been fixed. The update also brings support for three-way message notification.
Also new on these phones is Huawei's EMUI 10 software, based on the freshly minted Android 10. This update will be landing on all P30s in due course, but it's being showcased today on these new colors. (It's also significant, and highly unusual, that Huawei's promotional branding for the "new" P30 here at IFA 2019 gives Android 10 a major name-drop.)
Huawei licence: The Commerce Department of the US has now stopped giving temporary licences to Huawei, after continuing to support its customers for more than a year. However, what does this mean for the customers of the Chinese smartphone manufacturer? Well, now, Google and other software developers would not be able to send software updates to Huawei, and so subsequently, its customers. For the users of P30 Pro or any other phone by Huawei which has full Google Services, they would not get Android 11 or other updates for the phone. By extension, Honor devices will also stop receiving these updates.
